HOW DOES OUR AIR CONDITIONING WORK?
This can be a simple quick answer or a full-on science lesson.
There are no heating elements, these units operate at very low energy using inverters to turn a small amount of electricity into a huge amount of heating or cooling energy. These units operate at up to 400% efficiency, therefore 1kw of electricity used can produce 5kw of heating/cooling energy. A standard electric fan and convector heaters will use 1kw and give 1kw of heat back, therefore resulting in 0% efficiency.
As with all air conditioning systems, the principle remains the same whereby the heat is removed from one area and replaced with chilled dry air if used in cooling mode, or warmed dry air if used in heating mode, where the unwanted hot or cold air is expelled through a fan coil normally located outside the building called the ‘Condenser Unit’. The condenser can be best described as a ‘radiator’, as seen on motor vehicles, but instead of water running through the system it contains a refrigerant gas with a fan that draws air through the coils. Refrigerant is a man-made liquid that is designed to absorb and reject heat through the ‘vapour compression cycle'.
On its journey around the system it has two main stages:
1. The evaporator or indoor unit contains the refrigerant, air is blown through its veins to absorb or release chilled or heated air depending on what mode the unit is operating, either ‘heating’ or ‘cooling’.
2. The chilled dry air into the room, the condenser contains the high temperature gas that once again air is blown through the veins either collecting the heat or expelling it as it passes through.
